What is tofu?
Tofu, also known as bean curd, is a soybean product made by curdling fresh soy milk. Usually sold in rectangular blocks, tofu is an off-white colour and has a neutral taste, and absorbs the flavours of surrounding ingredients.
Tofu is a great source protein and iron, particularly for vegetarians, and is also high in calcium. It is low in saturated fat and contains no cholesterol. Tofu is also a very versatile food. In addition to acting as a vegetarian meat-substitute in savoury dishes, tofu can be scrambled, used in dips, and even desserts!
What is tempeh?
Tempeh, another soybean product, is made from cooked fermented soybeans which are traditionally cultured with Rhizopus Oligosporus culture. Tempeh has a firm texture and a distinctive nutty mushroom flavour.
Like tofu, it is highly versatile, taking on the flavours of the other foods with which it is cooked, and can be used in any type of cooking style. Tempeh is a excellent source of protein, iron and dietary fibre, and is low in saturated fat and free of cholesterol.
Do you use genetically modified soybeans?
No, we do not not use any genetically modified soybeans in our products.
Are all your products manufactured in Australia?
Yes, all our products are manufactured on our site in Banksmeadow, NSW.
Do you use Australian grown soybeans?
Yes! Our soybeans are 100% sourced from Australian farms and are made sure to have passed national food safety standards.
Does your packaging have Bisphenol–A or Phthalates?
No, our packaging is completely free from these substances.
Are your products gluten free?
TOFU:
Our plain tofu products do not contain gluten. They are also processed separately to our flavoured tofu products.
Our flavoured tofu products may contain gluten as they are marinated in soy sauce.
Our Tofu with Tempeh does not contain gluten as it is marinated in tamari which is a gluten-free alternative to soy sauce. It is also processed separately to our flavoured tofu products.
TEMPEH:
Our Plain Organic Tempeh, Tasty Tempeh, Mildly Spiced Tempeh, Indonesian Tempeh and Frozen Tempeh do not contain gluten (Tasty Tempeh uses tamari which is a gluten-free alternative to soy sauce). They are also processed separately to all our other products.
Our Tempeh Burger may contain gluten as it is marinated in soy sauce.
Are your products ready-to-eat?
All our products with the exception of Nutrisoy Fresh Indonesian Tempeh and Nutrisoy Frozen Tempeh have been pasteurised and are edible straight from the packet.
However, we highly recommend cooking tempeh products before eating for better taste and texture.
Are your products suitable for vegetarians and vegans?
All our products are vegetarian and vegan friendly with the exception of Soyco Chinese Honey Tofu which contains honey (not suitable for vegans).
How do you eat plain tofu?
Tofu can be stir-fried, grilled, steamed, crumbled, used in salads, sandwiches, soups, curries, desserts and much more. The possibilities are endless! Check out our Recipes page to discover the many ways you can enjoy our tofu!
How should I store my unused tofu after opening the packet?
All tofu should be kept refrigerated at 1-4°C. To store plain tofu after opening, place unused tofu in water and change the water every 2 days to maintain freshness up to 10 days. To store flavoured (pre-cooked) tofu after opening, store in an airtight container and use within 3 days.
Is your tofu fermented?
No, Nutrisoy only makes fresh tofu.
I can see black and grey dots on my tempeh! Is it still okay for me to eat it?
Yes, black and grey spots or patches are a normal part of the tempeh fermentation process and do not indicate spoilage.
What is Rhizopus Oligosporus?
Rhizopus Oligosporus is a natural culture that is used for the fermentation of tempeh.
